HVAC Warranties: 4 Things Homeowners Should Look For

Suppose you’ve made your choice of an HVAC system that is perfect for your home and meets all your comfort requirements. While it’s tempting to simply purchase the equipment and get ready for installation, there’s one more thing that you have to look into: the warranty. The warranty should give you a clear idea of what will be covered in the event something breaks down.

1. Overall Warranty Terms

Make sure you know how long the warranty will remain in effect as well as its specific provisions. There are warranties that are set up as lifetime warranties, but they only cover the equipment and not the cost of labor. A warranty may also only cover the cost of labor during the first year but not for succeeding years.

2. Warranty Terms for Parts

There may be different warranty terms for each part of your HVAC system. Usually, a warranty will cover large components of your HVAC system, such as the heat exchanger. However, you may find out that it does not cover smaller parts such as fan belts. All parts of your HVAC system are important, so it’s a must to know what is covered, separate or as a whole.

3. Extended HVAC Warranty

While most HVAC systems will last for 20 years, the warranty may not be active for that entire period. This is where you can look for an extended HVAC warranty to get an additional five to 10 years of warranty coverage. This way, heating or cooling services or repairs for your system will be covered longer.

4. Installation Paperwork

As a homeowner, it’s also your responsibility to check the installation paperwork. Be aware of warranties that will protect you in case the HVAC unit suffers damage during installation. However, the best way to prevent this from happening is to hire a reputable HVAC technician.

Most cooling and heating services in the U.S. use oil or other types of fuel that are harmful to the environment. This practice also increases the carbon footprint of households, especially during the winter. If you want to reduce your home’s impact on the environment, you might want to look into electrification.
