Can Rain Affect Your HVAC System’s Performance?

Rain can be a significant threat to many devices and appliances powered by electricity, especially when some of their components are installed outside your house. That said, you might be wondering if rain has an effect on your HVAC system.

Find the answer to this question here as HVAC repair and installation expert W.E. Beavers Jr. Heating & Cooling discusses whether rain can impact your HVAC system’s performance.

HVAC Systems Do Fine in the Rain

HVAC systems are well-built and designed to withstand the elements, including rain. Occasional heavy rain won’t damage your HVAC system, as long as all electrical parts are properly insulated and waterproofed. Rain can even help wash away any dirt and dust that has accumulated on your outdoor unit, so there’s no need to worry that it might short-circuit because of the water.

Other Factors That Could Affect HVAC Performance

Though they’re built to withstand rain, other elements can damage your HVAC system. We’ve listed some of the factors that can affect your unit’s performance below:

Storm damage. HVAC units won’t get damaged by the rain. However, they’re not protected against debris flying at high speeds during storms. So if your unit gets hit by large hailstones, falling branches or rocks or is blown over by a strong wind, you’ll have to get it checked by a heating and cooling services expert.

Flooding. Though the HVAC system is resistant to water, the effects of severe flooding can damage the internal components of your unit. If the flood water is less than 15 inches deep, your HVAC unit should be okay, but any higher than that, and it will be at risk of water damage. The best thing you can do in this case is to drain the flooded area immediately following the storm and have professionals check your unit for damage.

Corrosion. In general, HVAC units are built with metals and other materials that are resistant to the effects of moisture. However, they may still be vulnerable to corrosion, especially if they’re not regularly maintained or inspected. Always have a cooling and heating services expert regularly check your unit so they’re able to detect early signs of corrosion.

Suppose you’ve made your choice of an HVAC system that is perfect for your home and meets all your comfort requirements. While it’s tempting to simply purchase the equipment and get ready for installation, there’s one more thing that you have to look into: the warranty. The warranty should give you a clear idea of what will be covered in the event something breaks down.
